It has been widely planted for its hardiness and its pleasant shade, but it has also spread beyond its natural habitat and become an invasive species in many parts of the world. In British Columbia, it can be found in the Thompson-Okanagan region as well as other areas in central BC, and is considered a major threat to biodiversity.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Identifying Siberian Elm Trees

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]Siberian elm trees are small to medium-sized trees that are typically 20 to 30 feet tall, with a canopy spread of 15 to 25 feet wide. They have oval shaped leaves that have serrated edges, and their bark is greyish-brown with deep furrows. The trees produce small green flowers in late spring and early summer which turn into winged samaras (seeds). These samaras are easily dispersed by wind, making them one of the main factors contributing to the rapid spread of this species.[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” link_font=”|700|||||||” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Impact on Local Ecosystems

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]Invasive species like the Siberian elm tree can disrupt local ecosystems by competing with native plants for resources such as light, water, nutrients and space. This competition can lead to a decrease in biodiversity as native plants become crowded out or unable to compete with these more aggressive invaders. Not only do they reduce biological diversity within an area, but they can also increase soil erosion due to their shallow root systems which hold less soil than deep-rooted plants like native conifers. Additionally, the seeds from these trees may be consumed by animals which could potentially alter the food web within an ecosystem or lead to further spread of this species across larger areas.[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”4.16″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”][et_pb_image src=”https://www.pinevalleytreeservices.ca/app/uploads/Impact-on-Local-Ecosystems-1024×682.jpg” alt=”Impact-on-Local-Ecosystems” title_text=”Impact-on-Local-Ecosystems” _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.17.4″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″]The impacts of invasive species like the Siberian elm tree cannot be overstated; left unchecked these trees can quickly take over large areas and displace valuable native plant species that are essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems. Property owners in BC’s Thompson-Okanagan region should be vigilant about identifying these trees on their land so that they can take steps towards controlling their spread before it’s too late.
